Fordson major new performance input shafts

I have acquired a new performance major backend and gearbox, I have some play in the gearbox input shafts (live drive), I presume I shall have to replace needle bearings and seals, for the outer shaft is it just a case of pulling of the snout and replacing bearing and seal or do I have to remove themain input shafts from inside the bell housing and if so is it a fairly simple process, I presume the gear selector lever may have to come of as well?

Kind regards,
Kevan.

Hi,
I have checked and the inner shaft is only moving when you move the outside shaft, I can start disassembling but would rather have a few pointers before I start, hopefully it’s a simple job!

Hello Kevan,

On the live drive you have 2 input shaft. You can easily take these out from the front. It's only the 4 bolts with the lock wire. There's a seal between the 2 shaft, and one between the outer and the housing. When pulling out the shafts, the ball bearing will come out too.

Hi Mathias1,
Thank you for the information, it sounds like a very easy fix even for me, I am also going to do the rear pto seals as well, I presume that’s an easy fix to, also I’m going to replace all gasket for example gear lever, steering box and the likes to make the backend leak free.

Many thanks and kind regards,
Kevan.

Kevan,

If you go to address every seal or gasket on your tractor this is already a list for the backend (excluding the liftcover):
rear axle seals 2x
rear axle trumpets to backend: 2x
pto seal at the back 1x
pto gasket at the back 1x
gasket behind the dif house 2x
gasket behind the brake house 2x
seal on the brake shafts 2x
o-ring on the diff lock axle 1x
small cover at the bottom of the backend gasket: 1x
big cover at he bottom of the backend gasket: 1x
gasket between back end and gearbox: 1x
seal on the pedal axle: 2x
gear selector gasket to backend: 1x
gasket between liftcover and gasket. there are also o-rings on the feed and return pipe.

gearbox:
pto dropbox gasket to gearbox housing 1x
pto dropbox gasket cover in the front 1x
pto dropbox big o-ring 1x
pto selector seal 1x
pto selector housing gasket 1x
pto shaft seal in the dropbox 2x (unless you have a New Performance you will need to put 2 seals back to back)

if fitted: gearbox handbrake seal 1x (same size as the pedal shaft seals)
outgoing shaft seal 1x
gearbox plug at the back gasket 1x
outgoing shaft gasket 1 or 2 times?
ingoing shaft seal 1x (live drive has 2 seals)
ingoing shaft housing gasket 1x
left side cover of the gearbox gasket 1x
right side cover of the gearbox gasket 1x (if a belt pulley is fitted, this will also need a seal and o-ring)
High low shifter seal 1x
High low shifter housing to gearbox gasket 1x
primary gearbox to gearbox housing gasket: 1x
small cover on the primary gearbox gasket: 1x

I also put a gasket between the steering box and the gearbox

I think this list is as complete as possible, but if some one knows other seals to address, please let us know!

Hi Mathias,
I taken the side covers of my gearbox and found some debris at the bottom of the gearbox, it come from the transmission brake and parts of a bearing, I noticed that the upper transmission shaft had the small bearing that had fell to bits and the cage of the large bearing was broken, I removed the transmission, split the gearbox and backend, replaced the bearings and done all the gaskets and seal, sorted the transmission brake, only thing I’ve not done on your list is the hi-lo selector shaft seal and some o rings on the hydraulics but everything else is done, it’s good that I’ve checked everything from top to bottom and hopefully she’ll be good for another 57 years!

Kevan,

that's good news. Did you make any photo's doing the job?
