Crankcase Breather

Hi,
Thought I'd pop the top off the the little breather pot. Found a mush of oily sludge and what appeared to the remains of rapidly disintegrating sort of mesh pot scrubber substance.
The filtery bit doesn't seem to be available and is easy enough to create, but I'm guessing there doesn't need to be an oil bath in there?
Any advice appreciated.

The breather is only a filter thanks to the oil bath in it, otherwise the dust will ruin the engine. It wants attention with the same intervals as the air filter. Most are neglected and need urgent cleaning; the mesh shouldn't be too bad.

yes, it needs oil in it to work correctly. it is an "Oil Bath Filter" system

and yes, they do need to be cleaned out periodically - you can use the same oil in it as you use in the engine.

Unfortunately I don't have it to hand here, logic suggested it should have oil but I can't recall seeing an oil level mark on the casing hence the question. The mesh looked like a deteriorating perforated plastic substance which didn't look right.

The oil level is the increase in diameter near the bottom,

about 1/2" from the lowest point of the bath.
