It will be until you assemble the gearbox and engine, then the pilot bearing takes up the play.

Hazzard,

the input shaft is hold in it's place by a little bearing that sits inside the flywheel.
While you are there you can also change that little bearing. It isn't that expensive.

Thanks to all members for your input, I may have more when fitting the gearbox.

One is will I need a gasket for gearbox to bell housing or will instant gasket be ok ?

no need for a gasket there as far as I know. there is even a hole at the bottom to drain leaking oil.

No gasket between the engine and gearbox, there is a gasket between the gearbox and rear axle (not available).

The input shaft should turn freely, so you'll need to inspect this. It could be a bearing, but you'll have to look at it. Take the main parts out and inspect them separately to find the problem. Make sure you keep everything in the right sequence and the right way round.

Have found that, having removed the side plate that holds the selctors, the box was in 2 gears at same time.
Removed side plate again but not sure which selector goes where.
Replaced seal in pto box, things moving on slowly!

Have you checked you can't get it in two gears at once again? This should save future problems. As for the location of the selectors, put the recessed part in line with the raised portion of the gears, it will be easier to move the gears, make quite sure they're in contact with each other.

On a slightly different note I have dismantled the pto gearbox today. It's obviously been apart before because the selector has been assembled the wrong way around meaning that the gears were always engaged when the PTO was supposed to be disengaged. Took it apart, turned the selector round on its shaft, tightened the securing pin and works perfectly.

Tomorrow's job is to sort the main gearbox selectors into their proper position and make gaskets for all the castings and reassemble.

Once again many thanks to all for your input, the info has been very helpful . H

At last with the help of a friend I have got the gear selectors in the proper order and the plate bolted back in place.
The PTO gearbox is also fixed and now runs out of permanent engagement

Just got to bolt everything back in place then fit to tractor.
