Power Major Steering Box Rebuild - Help With Roller Bearings

Post by JLworld »

Hi,

I am currently rebuilding my steering box with a new shaft and bearings.

The new shaft fits a treat but I am struggling to fit the new bearings I have managed to get the bottom one pressed in and had the balls sitting in it.

However the top bearing I cannot see a way of installing it?

Any ideas or methods would be appropriated

Thanks

Will

Try fitting the top bearing over the shaft with the balls in place and put the column on, remembering to remove free play with shims.

Thats how I eventually did mine plus plenty of old partly dry grease to stop the ball bearings falling off.It takes patience and steady hands and I don`t appear to have either. I also filled the box with Land Rover semi liquid grease after the new oil leaked out in no time. Dave

using grease is the way to go to fit all the balls in place

Would you use normal EP2 grease or a special grease

Normal grease will be fine, but let it get very sticky for this.

If you take one of the centre caps off a front wheel there is usually plenty of old sticky grease in there, it's worked for me before now

If you do that you might as well adjust the wheel bearings.
