When i repaired the wings on my old major a few years ago i used a parafffin spray gun to spray used engine oil down inside the wing supports once the paint had dried, hopefully it'll slow the rust down in there!

We were intending to do the same sort of thing and on all the mudguards. I'll also blow them clean at the same time as I blow the radiator's on a regular basis in order to avoid the buildup of dust inside that caused this in the first place.

We're done! More welding.

After more welding this is what we ended up with.

We then tried to patch the holes with some filling material, not very successfully.
Image
Image
And then painted two coats of blue as Ford did, the 2011 Agriline pots we had match the original perfectly! (Note the other mudguard, see viewtopic.php?f=2&t=8373.)

While we had the paint out we decided to paint all the new bits and the side lights, so that they're less conspicuous.

And now back on and ready for a small touch up painting and that's that.

Back in the barn complete for the first time in six weeks.

Now to clean the other axle casting!

Well done Sandy, looking good. While you are on a mission to treat rust it might be worth taking the brake drum covers off and painting the insides of them (if you haven't already), mine rotted from the inside out and by the time i realised it was too late

Billy's covers are in good condition, but if we take them off we'll clean the brakes too.

The final painting on the mudguard was done a while ago, but I have some pics today, showing the bits that have been done (also on Davie).

Wow. The rust you had in your guards looks a lot worse than my guards. Happy you got it finished. I prefer to cut out and plate on to stronger metal. I have made the patches for the strengthening beams today. So hopefully i will have the guards repaired by the end of the week. There is only minor plating to be done on the outside of the guards.

I have seen rotten mudguards sell for a few quid at auctions, definitely worth buying if you have some to repair. I cut up an old one to repair mine and it saved having to form the horizontal ribs as i just cut the repair section from the scrap one. The ribs are parallel so they can be cut from a section anywhere across the mudguard where the metal is good, and the rear light bracket had rotted through so i cut a piece from the scrap one with the curve already formed

Thanks Sandy. Don't think i'll take up bodywork for a living though, i wouldn't earn much due to the time it took me!
