New front axle spindle bushes

Post by JLworld »

Hi I am currently changing the front axle spindle bushes on my power major.

I have knocked them in with a hammer… now realising I should have pulled them in with threaded rod!

Anyway they are too small for the spindle so I believe they need reaming has anyone got any suggestions on how to go about this.

Is it a job that I am better off taking the axle off and taking it down to my local dealer to ream? Do I need a lid of special tools?

Thanks
Will

Clean the bent edges with a fine ish round file, if they have only distorted at the ends it shouldn't take much, keep filing and checking until it fits

Thanks John,

So I don’t need a special reamer just keep working at it with a round file until the spindle fits!

Thanks

You won't need a reamer if it's only the end thats out of shape, you should be fine just filing it. Before i had reamers i've used a piece of small diameter pipe in the drill, cut a slot about an inch long down the end and put some emery cloth in the slot and wound it round the pipe and used it to ream out a bush

In this case you will need to ream it to 1 1/2", as it's a semi finished bush. You can do this without removing the extension.

You are right Sandy, i stand corrected. It's been a long time since i did any kingpin bushes, i think they are about 0.5mm undersize new if my memory is corect

Ok thank you - so I should be able to ream these out with the sand paper method. I can really see any reamers online for 1 1/2 or 38.1mm so I guess the best thing to do is try the sand paper method.

Sand paper is far too coarse, try to find an adjustable reamer.

You need tools, even the file, dat has never been used in steel. Even tuch it. It makes a facet on the tools and it won't cut the way it should.
Sandpaper is the farmer way. Reaming is the right way.

And for the next time, instead of using the hammer, put them a night in the freezer before installing. Will be much easier!

Great idea about the freezer!
My work have allowed me to borrow an adjustable reamer so that will be the best way forward!

Have now completed the job and would definitely say it is worth getting your hands on a reamer. Luckily for me my workplace had them I could borrow.
