In a pinch the other day, I had to use our Fordson Major Diesel.
I was surprised that the plunger strokes rocked her more than my Ford 3600.
Would this be due to the lack of live PTO ? I also did not have an overrunning clutch.

I would't think the pto drive would have anything to do with it, maybe wheel/tyre size and pressures would affect it, my major will jump around more on a baler than my ford 4100, the major has 12.4x36 rear tyres and the ford has 14.8x28. The major also has larger, thinner front tyres that have alot more sidewall movement than the ford, i just put it down to that, but i may be wrong, it has been known!

The std. PTO on a Major is much quicker than most, doing 540 rpm at 1200 rpm engine speed. That could well explain your rough runs.

Interesting Sandy, I was not aware of that. I'll pay closer attention next time we bale with Hyacinth.
She has no tach, but I'll count plunger strokes per minute and per bale.
This might also explain why when I teddered hay with her last year it felt all wrong.
