Repairing instruments.

A couple of the instruments on my FSM don't work.

The tacho needle does flicker up and down.

But I'd like to hopefully fix the tacho and the water temp guage sometime. Both mechanical.

Trouble is I'm not sure if they can be repaired.
I haven't checked yet where the fault is on either.

If they can't be fixed, then what do you do?
I know aftermarket ones tend to be rubbish and if you get original ones from a tractor being sold off for the pieces there's a good chance they're no good either.

What's wrong with the tachometer? If the needle moves it means problems will not be in the drive unit or cable.
Does the engine feel just a bit warm or very hot when running? It's possible your thermostat is stuck open or not there, or that the temp gauge tube is not sealed.
There are specialist gauge repair companies that should manage to fix what you have. Definitely keep away from repro gauges, second hand ones are around but probably more expensive than reparing your own ones. A scrapy might be worth a look at.
