1964 Fordson Super Major NP - Paint Colours

Post by Sebwells »

Hi everyone, I am currently restoring a 1964 Fordson Super Major NP and would like to give some bits a fresh coat of paint. I’ve read that with the new performance it wasn’t empire blue anymore but another colour….but I can’t seem
To find what that colour it is or is it empire blue?

Would love to hear from people their advice and if they have a recommendation on where to get it from.

Thanks
Seb

The blue is lighter, and the grey is not like Ford grey. You'll have to match your new colour to the original paint, ensure you find a clean bit for that.

Thanks Sandy, I can definitely Colour scratch some of the Blue off to match but the grey is a bit of a problem as the mudguards and grill aren’t on the tractor.

I was hoping their was a bit of a silver bullet

Try the inside of the lights, they should be very good for this. You might also get it off the wheels, but it could be more difficult.

This is listed as New Performance grey, not sure how accurate it is though, i know from experience the minefield of tractor colours and trying to get them correct!

Vapormatic paints do tend to be the nearest to the original colours that can be bought ready made. It would take an exceptional colour recognition / paint mixing system to exactly match a sample. Alan Davies, the refinishing specialist, has used Vapormatic paints in his DVD on tractor restoration although he does also mix colours, and his work is of the highest quality.

Another thought has just occurred to me, the late production 1964 tractors had a slightly lighter blue again than the previous NP models. This could be down to a different paint supplier.
