1959 Power Major | Injector Pump Lever

Hi,

Should the stop lever on the injector pump move when the tractor isn’t running?

1 year ago when the tractor last run the injector pump worked fine. Since then I have been busy restoring the tractor.

I am now within 6 months of finishing and pulled the stop lever on top of the pump expecting it to move? Should it move or should it be static when the tractor isn’t running?

The stop lever should always move, I think your plungers might be stuck, but before you get to that try pressing the excess fuel button and then pulling the stop lever to see if it pops out again or it stays in either position.

I have tried pushing the excess fuel and it pops straight back out. It doesn’t stay in at all

Hi Will, make sure the pump is spotlessly clean and remove the side plate and see if the rack (the square horizontal bar) is free, it should move side to side. If it is stuck it will prevent the stop lever moving and the pump will not work, give it a squirt of diesel and gently try working it free

Thanks John,

When it was last running it was reving up and not settling down unless you jiggled the throttle lever.

After moving the throttle lever up and down the engine revs would settle down

That sounds like the rack might have been sticking maybe?

It could well be, if you remove the side plate you will see what the inside looks like. It should be nice and clean but you may find it's full of rust and crud, if it is then you will need a tub of diesel and a toothbrush to clean it all up

Let us know what you find, there are a couple of things to do to lube it all up before you replace the side plate

Looks clean enough in there, i've seen them in a horrible state, could do with a wash out though.Think you will need a new gasket too, don't put gasket sealer on it as you will need to remove the side plate at least every 12 months to give the inside a good oiling. Assuming the overflow pigtail pipe isn't blocked, using an oil can squirt oil on top of each plunger and let it run down into the cambox at the bottom. You will probably get a mix of diesel and oil running out of the overflow, keep pumping oil in until you get fresh oil from the overflow (it may take a while as the overflow doesn't run very quickly)

It will move from left to right now with a screwdriver and light pressure. Also the stop lever now pushes the rack over to the right.

Should it stay now or return to either side as it seams to be fair static where ever it is on the rack.

What normally pushes it back to the left is that the spring in the governor on the right hand side?

If you take the governor end housing off check the diaphragm is in good condition and everything is clean in there. There is a gauze filter under the round cover on the top, this should be clean and not blocked

That pump looks very dry, put in plenty of diesel and keep it there until everything is working (the rack should be completely free, you'll notice that if you remove the governor, otherwise it should promptly spring towards the rear, moving further back when you press the excess fuel button), then put oil in to help with lubrication.

Hi all,

I have dieseled the rack and removed the governor to find the diaphragm has a big tear in it. So I’ll need a new one of those! The rack low moves with fairly little force by hand.

The governor housing also had some rusty jollop at the bottom so I have cleaned that out.

Sounds like you are getting there. When you fit the new diaphragm you will know if the rack is free as it will return to the left when you move it, and as Sandy says it should jump a bit futher left when you press the excess fuel button, and if you then move it right the button should pop back out. If all that happens then I think you have cracked it!

Thanks John,

I am trying to also make sure the timing is correct. I have moved the flap on the sump to see the flywheel and turned the engine until the lines on the injector pump line up. My serial number of 151 starting would mean I need it to be 23 degrees on the flywheel? At the moment it seams to be on 26…? How do you adjust this to the correct 23? Also how do you remove the pump is it the two bolts on the coupling and the four under the pump?

Remove the 4 bolts underneath and the pipes and slide it backwards, the coupler just pulls apart. To set the timing line the flywheel to 23°, there should be a pointer on the pump that lines up with a notch on the front coupler, if they dont line up slacken the 2 bolts on the coupler and turn it so the notch lines up with the pointer
