'55 Control valve lever o-ring

Post by leeroy »

Not too much gleaned from a search. Hoping this indicates a fairly easy job. Book shows it pretty clear.
Will standard o-ring from a kit work? Also can't find gasket, so any advice there?
Thanks,Lee

You'll have to make the gasket, the o-ring is E1ADKN-994624. It shouldn't be too difficult, but do try to get the lever in the same position to have the quadrant fitting nicely in all the working positions of the lever.

Is gasket paper or a thin rubber preferred here?
Also I'm not finding any specs on the o ring part number. Likely to find a match from my o ring kit? In other words, is it a standard o ring?

I would use gasket paper with some sealing resin if considered necessary.

Hello guys,
I just need to untwist wire to remove set screw to get handle out, correct? Does the wire need to be re-installed?

Correct, definitely refit the wire, but fit new wire if the old wire breaks. While you've got the lever out you might as well check the rivets holding the lever to the shaft just in case you get what Billy had and need to reattach the lever to the shaft, as we had to do it without removing the shaft. Admittedly someone had made a poor attempt at fixing it before (tried to weld it on very badly which is why it came off again), which made it more difficult.

I have not been able to do anything other than idle Hyacinth and cycle the lift up and down a few times, but so far the o-ring change looks successful. The old o-ring had a break for sure. I must admit that I couldn't find gasket paper or even a tube of gasket maker here at home. I gambled on a cereal box, figuring if I had to, disassembling a second time would be fine.
I wish I took pictures as the gaskets came out nice for my first go at making my own. A 7.62X54 shell made a perfect punch for the holes.
Sandy the rivets looked terrific thanks for drawing my attention to that.
The lever only seemed to go on the shaft one way so I'm not sure what you meant to get it aligned correctly? Hope I did not miss a step but position seems correct in its travel.
Thanks!

I think everything is fine from what you say, so that's a good thing. Replacing the gasket again shouldn't be at all difficult, but hopefully not necessary.
