I'm not sure it's worth doing the cardboard, but that's just me, I definitely think it's a good idea to do two runs, preferably the second one deeper. It's also worth trying to give the engine the maximum load by using the highest gear possible without unduly straining the engine (we tend to plough in third, fourth is ok for the engine but not to get a good finish in my mind); it also depends on what sort of field you're in as if it's very wee you might not have enough space to get going. Ford ploughed 283.7 acres in 144 hours with a single Major and TS73 plough mostly in fourth possibly even faster, using 0.76 gallons/hour of fuel; this is well documented in the last film of ford and fordson on film 2.
