Super Major After Market Hyd. Pump, Will Work???

Post by Ricardo »

Hi, this is Ricardo Gomez from México. Maybe you can help me. I have two fordson tractors,
1 power major and 1 super major. The first one is running and working on my farm, the second one
needs a new hydraulic pump. Even though the power major is running, it´s hydraulic pump is starting
to show wear. I saw new hydraulic pump aftermarket from Agriline, ltd., and from White House Ltd.

adapter to use this pump with the power major tractor:
[img] https://drive.google.com/file/d/1oTage7 ... sp=sharing [img]

There is one little problem, my old hydraulic pump's gear from the power major which is
still working has 28 teeth, and the new aftermarket pumps have 21 teeth gears:
[img] https://drive.google.com/file/d/1NBHcc2 ... sp=sharing [img]

In order to make fit the new pump on my tractor, can I take the 28 teeth gear from my older
pump and fit it onto the new aftermarket pump? Will it work?
do you thing will be any problem in the pressure driven by the pump using the old 28 gear?

Do you know if somebody else, has done it already with these after market pumps, and
have had good results?

Sorry for my english my native language is Spanish.

Please helpe me, I don`t have money to buy a brand new tractor, so I need to continue
working with my fordsons.

Thank you in advance.

Hi Ricardo, welcome to the forum. Many new parts aren't made very well, so it's worth looking for good second hand parts.
Here is the hydraulics section of the Ford manual: http://www.fordson.se/5_Hydraulik_Verks ... 47-166.pdf, http://www.fordson.se/6A_Hydraul_Suplem ... 01-024.pdf, http://www.fordson.se/6B_Hydraul_Suplem ... 25-050.pdf
I don't know but I assume you don't have an NP Super Major, in which case you won't want the 21 tooth gear at all. If the hydraulics are lifting but not holding the hydraulic pump is ok, but one or more seals are not. Have a look at the manual and see what you find with your tractors.
Some general pics of them would be nice too.

Hi Sandy, nice to meet you,
first I need to fix the droping on my power major´s hydraulic.
Here the pics:
Unload valve

[img] https://drive.google.com/file/d/1v_ePw3 ... haring[img]
[img] https://drive.google.com/file/d/1iNVXZN ... sp=sharing [img]
looks exactly as the letter a) in the manual
[img] https://drive.google.com/file/d/1J1QN6q ... sp=sharing [img]
except, for these diferences:
[img] https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ixV6QP ... sp=sharing [img]
1) my tractor doesn`t have this O'ring above the unload valve adjuster
2) my tractor doesn`t have this slim shim before the spring
3) the little valve adjuster's shaft is shorter in my tractor than in the manual.
I did observe that the little O'ring in the unload valve seat, has become hardened, maybe becase the heat
and presurre. I will buy one new a fit it.

The unload valve passage looks fine
[img] https://drive.google.com/file/d/164p5Nt ... sp=sharing [img]
My Non return Valve was lacking a seal washer, I bought one and put it in place as I show next
[img] https://drive.google.com/file/d/1inb9IR ... sp=sharing [img]
[img] https://drive.google.com/file/d/1icKzLw ... sp=sharing [img]
My control unit valve chest was lacking one O'ring in the front, as I show, I already put it in place a new
O'ring:

So far, Is all I have found about my hydraulic problem, pleas give me your, opinion, about the lacking
of the O'ring above de unload valve adjuster, the lacking of the shim on the adjuster, and the smaller
lenght of the adjuster shaft, do you thing this is part of the problem?
Thank you in advance

The unoading valve adjuster is not original, you might want to do a pressure test to see what sort of adjusting shim you need; the original adjuster would be better but this should do for now once the pressure is set to 2200psi while you look for one. All the new o-rings will help, but the piston seal could well need changing too. Your valve chest (and unloading valve) is a Major one rather than a Power Major one, but the only differences are the unloading valve and the piston valve which you don't seem to have removed. If changing seals and o-rings fails you might need a slightly larger piston valve, but hopefully not. Once fixed the arms should stay fully up for weeks.
The serial number and casting codes of both tractors would help to tell what you have so you get the right parts.

Thank you Sandy,
My power major's serial is 1538264 therefore was made January 1960

The casting code from my control valve unit chest is E1ADKN 994794

E1ADKN-994794 is the part number for the valve chest cover, the casting codes will be on bigger parts like the top cover just under the seat and will have three or four digits: a month letter, a date and a year letter, some codes are slightly different with the date then the month letter then the year number (last digit only). I think the valve chest itself should have a code, but I've never found it on Billy and suspect it's on the inner part. It seems like someone fitted a Major valve chest, but if the top cover casting code is much earlier it could be that the whole top cover is much older than your tractor. Some general pics of the tractor would help clarify this too.

hi Sandy,
The serial number and casting codes of my POWER MAJOR are:
-Serial number is 153 826 4

-Casting code on cover lift is:
EIADKN
994787
T1
D 25D

Yesterday I worked all day long putting back control valve unit, and gear box

[img] https://drive.google.com/file/d/1nr5T9a ... sp=sharing [img]

The BAD news is, arms are still dropping down, very slowly but going down.

Your top cover is April 1960, but your valve chest is pre August 1958, so you've got quite a mix of parts there. I would check the piston seal next, as they're the most common cause of a leak. If that doesn't fix it you'll need a slightly larger piston valve.

Did you inspect the cylinder? It could be that it had internal corrosion or a crack, but otherwise I would measure the piston valve and bore.

Ricardo,

if arms are slowly dropping, changing pump will not be the solution.
You can always test the pump with a pressure gauge
Fordson Super Major New Performance
County Super 4 built on the Fordson Super Major
Selene built on the Fordson Super Major New Performance with Silvant winch
