Hi,
Wonder if anyone can help.
I have a Roadless Fordson Power Major, non live drive. There is a noise coming from, I think, the gearbox.
It is not a grinding noise, and there is no problem changing gears.
Is like a heavy whine, almost as if something is rubbing. Is a lot worse in reverse.
When idling, there is no noise at all.
Could it be something serious, do I need to strip the gearbox or can I change something without having to strip it down, or could I leave it as it is?!
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks very much
Jeff

Sounds like a little bearing noise. Sometimes when the bearings wear a little the gears will whine because they are slightly out of alinement. As long as you do not have any major oil leaks, or feel any binding in the transmission, I would not worry about it that much. Many an old tractor has a wine in the transmission that has been there for many an hour in the field. Also, it is not uncommon for a transmission with "square cut gears" to have a natural whine just by the way the gears mesh. Dandy Dave!
Have a Fordsonful day Folks!
