Comparing Mk1 and Mk2 manifold ports

Post by Billy26F5 »

Having got Mk1 gaskets when we got the kit for Super Billy I thought it would be fun to compare the ports using the wrong gasket (note they are repro parts so accuracy could be doubtful) on our half Super Major's head (which is E1ADDN-6052J):

It shows what I found a surprise: the exhaust ports appear to have remained unchanged! All the rest is different, the intake ports are enormous on the Mk2, the bolt holes are in totally different locations and there's the pad at the front to mount the Thames Trader air filter or the power steering pump bracket on Major's. But there's a more subtle change as well: the LH side of the head is 1/2" further out on a Mk2. To anyone with both heads this will be very clear but many of us aren't locky enough to have that so it reminds us of the huge change there was to the head from E1ADDN-6052E to E1ADDN-6052F. There are other changes as well but they're more straight forward (new rocker cover tapped holes, extra hole for temp gauge connection to enable a heater in lorries though rarely used and the bypass tube and slot to separate it so the shrouded thermostat is able to work). This has however made me wonder about the service head E1ADDN-6052S. Does anyone have this head? the reason is visible just behind the no. 4 exhaust port, there's material there apparently matching the Mk1 manifold. Was E1ADDN-6052S a mixed part or was it simply a new name for E1ADDN-6052E? Only the real parts can confirm this. My impression is that E1ADDN-6052S is very rare but that could be very wrong.
