having problems with lumpy tickover all filters are less then 50 hours old, after speaking to a friend he said to drain pump with bolt on underside as the lub may be thick and dirty.
i have done this and the fluid that
came out was a thick diesel but with the smell of gloss paint.
question is what do i put back in and how much?
Also if the picture has worked the red pipe is just hanging free and drips diesel all the time engine is running.
ok pic not uploading so i may have to go into more detail, pump is a mimmec and engine is a 380 6 cylinder ford engine, there is no oilfeeds to pump just the loose pipe that drips diesel, pump is direct mounted to timing gear

You shoud put back normal engine oil. The filler cap is the big square at the top. The level check is the bolt at the side in the front end. The red tube is the draintube that keeps the level from rising over limit when the fuel that leaks from the pump elements. The pump is worn if it´s coming a lot from the drainpipe.

would a worn pump cause tractor to run lumpy like the governors where worn on a 4 cylinder engine.
can pump be mended at a diesel specialist .
Had a look on pump have no square plug on top but there is a large circular plug with a screwdriver slit in it, is this the filler plug?

The oil quality and amount has some effect on smooth running.
The large circular might be it, i have an older Minimec so it could be some changes over the years.

The oil in the pump has nothing to do with diesel leaking out of the red pipe.

Oil is for the governors only in the front part of the pump. Diesel is allowed to leak into this part of the pump and dilute the oil. This should be changed everytime you change your engine oil and replaced with engine oil. So I would not suspect you have a problem in this compartment.

Diesel dripping from the red pipe is another matter. This pipe should have a "pigtail" in it to hold a certain amount of diesel in the pump cam box for lubrication of the pumping elements. If diesel is leaking out here, it indicates wear on the pumping elements and as there are no seals, just a metal to metal seal with very close tolerances, to hold diesel under pressures of up to 3000 psi, I would suspect that you need an urgent (and expensive) pump overhaul.

thanks for info grani and brian, i have made a pigtail and put onto pump and have refilled front of pump with oil.
I now have a smooth tickover and left it running for 15 minutes with no diesel coming from pigtail, i will have to wait and see if it is the same when working under load.
