Help wiring up new solenoid

Post by Winchester »

The old solenoid on my fordson super dexta broke when I tried to redo the wires for the terminal. I ordered a new solenoid, but it's a bit different from old one.
On the old one I have two large and two small terminals, two large and two small wires. But the new solenoid only has two large terminals and one small one.
I have tried to figure it out reading the wiring diagrams, and I think I got it. Am I wrong to think that I just can ground/earth the last small wire to the solenoid?
Or do I need the buy a different solenoid?

Hi Winchester,

I think this solenoid is grounded by the casing.
So you don't need a ground wire to the "-" of the battery.

To test this (this test is meant for a tractor that has a negative ground), bolt the solenoid to the tractor, but no wires yet.
Connect the battery to the tractor as usual, but not to the solenoid yet.
Now take one wire and connect this with one end to the "+" of the battery and then with the other end touch the middle connector on the solenoid, the small one.
If the solenoid clicks, it works.

Now you can connect the thick wires as usual, and the small connector to the wire coming from the startermotorswitch.

Hope this works.
Regards, Rob.
