Grinding gears

Hello I'm Mike and new to the Forum.....I'm in Australia(NSW).
We bought an old Dexta recently. The gear sticks were jumping out of their guides and therefore the tractor was getting stuck in gear so we built them up a bit with welding. They are fine now, but when we try and put it in gear they grind a bit so you have to work the clutch to get it in gear. Once in gear all is fine, and when you use the clutch whilst in gear the tractor does stop. The PTO does not grind when you engage it. Do you think we may have built them up too much or does this sound like something else?
Thanks
