thanks brett.

Dexta Engine Numbers

My engine no is 149xxxx and my standard Dexta's tractor no starts 09A..., ie Nov/Dec1961, with casting codes typically Sep1961. My engine is original as it matches the original buff Reg doc. So your engine is approx 70,000 earlier than mine.

If it is reasonable to assume that the number of Dextas built between Jan - Oct 1961 with tractor nos running 71921 - 312000 (see this website) is (312000-71921)=240079 (seems alot!!), we might deduce that your engine dates to 1961. I have no idea if this is correct, perhaps others can shed further light? Were all tractor numbers in fact allocated?

Perhaps others can also post their engine and tractor nos so we can plot a graph?

All the best,
Ben

I have a 1960 Dexta and the engine number is 1450676. If enough people post their numbers, we might get some idea of the engine number range for certain years. The only problem is that we won't know if everyone's engine is original.

Have you a tractor no or typical casting date?

Ben,
The tractor number is 957E49613. The casting codes are from Feb. 1960, except the left axle housing, which is Jan. 1959.

Brett,
I would think it would be close to the original engine.
What is the serial number of your tractor?
Might be around 957E22800? (from the date codes and engine number.)

It looks if one was to ignore the beginning 14 of the engine serial number, that the rest of the number should be somewhat close to the numbers following the 957E of the tractor number although the engine numbers seem to climb more quickly than the tractor numbers (Maybe some engine units that did not measure up were discarded?)

On JC's tractor for example, the engine might be the (14)50676's one made and the tractor is (957E)49613 for a difference of 1063 (50676-49613).

Ben,

I think the last 957E tractor was 957E93371 and the next one built was the first 09A at 09A312001.

Cheers,
Les

Interesting - how did you deduce this? So not all tractor numbers in the sequences were allocated?
Do we know what the Dexta production numbers were for each of the years?
Thanks,
Ben

  • 1957 .. 143, 1958 .. 22414, 1959 .. 21874, 1960 .. 27489
The serial Numbers move around a bit as Petrols fit in to the sequence and had a different prefix and of course engine number. So there are around 4000 spare engine no.s.

I don't know whether you can relate serial and engine numbers but, if you like, I will start to build a register like the petrol Dexta one and we can see what happens. If you send me your engine numbers, serial numbers and casting codes for clutch housing, gearbox, rear axle, axle shafts and hydraulics I will get started.

I still need more petrol Dexta numbers too!! :D

Ben,

I saw the 957E93371 (31 Oct/1961) serial number quoted on the Internet from
"The FORD tractor story, Part one, Dearborn to Dagenham 1917-1964" - Stuart Gibbard".
I don't have the book myself though so.......

And, but....the last serial number for the Dexta/Super Dexta was quoted from the same book as 09D 924433.

Dextrous just recently posted one at 09D 925404 and I have seen numbers claimed into the 09D 928XXX range so how accurate is the quote or the book??

Anyone own a copy of the book to check?

There is also a date code on the engine a bit above and behind the injector pump.

Dextrous,
Your lift cover casting code 3E24 equals 24 May 1963 which means the new casting codes came into effect earlier (although maybe only a week) than the commonly believed June 1963.
With the serial number and this code your tractor has helped narrow down 2 questions on Dextas. Good work.

Hi Everybody,

Without getting too involved in your thread, I can advise you that the last of the Dexta/Super Dexta was Engine No. 928248 (Domestic) and 928247 (Export). These numbers are quoted in the Dealers Parts Book. Supplement #13. Reprinted February 1965.

I'll be taking the seat off as soon as I get a tractor tinkering pass from the girlfriend. I'll double check this code and get the other codes I'm missing.

I go with Barry on the first and last Serial numbers. The information is in the parts book printed by Ford Motor Company in 1965.

I have a spare clutch & gearbox with the following codes:
Tractor Serial no--------------09C910127
Casting code, clutch-----------D 2 J >>> (2 April 1963)
Casting code, gearbox---------3 D 23 >>> (23 April 1963)

So this tractor seems to straddle the change over!
