i found my dexta was getting harder to start and cold start was working as it should, so i thought i better remove the head a lap the valves, once the head was removed i found my loss of compression on no2 cylinder on the exhaust valve the head had cracked through the valve seat and into the casting about .5inch
i went and bought a new cylinder head and all is well again apart from the fact that the combustion chamber caps would not go in far enough into the head sticking out by about 2mm there is no way the copper sealing gasket for the cap will take this up so i ground the lip of the cap down enough so they will go in nice and close, then bolted them back up using some high heat resistant rtv. that was the head sorted.
i then fitted a new starter as the original was in poor shape it would work when cold but if you had been topping for a day and you stopped her hot the starter wouldnt work,
so i replaced it with a pre engaged starter and what a huge differance it makes to the starting, turns over very fast now with loads of compression, as i was bleeding the injectors tightening them one at a time she fired without the heater. so i got her hot and re torqed the head.
i thought you should know to check your cylinder heads carefully when ever they are removed.
Know i have the great starting tractor i used to have.
