Small Baler

Hi has anyone ever used a small baler on a dexta ? I have 4 acres that we make hay on but its had finding someone to bale just when you need it . The fields are on a slope so could weight be a problem ?

Theres a couple of our SuperD pulling a MF baler - cant remember the model number but it used to do around 15 acres a year on quite hilly terrain

After we have finished the dexta rebuild the bailer/turner is next

To really answer that question would need a bit more information
How steep is the field
How much tread have the tyres got, Have you water balast in the tyres
I dont think there is any problem with powering a baler horsepower wise, are you baling up or down the steep parts,
Balers are quite well balanced so there is very little weight to give traction to your tractor, so climbing steep slopes without spinning and braking decending them are the problems

i havent had problems baling with a dexta on steep hills its all down to what gear you use, if you select the right gear for the job going down hill the engine does the work for you, if it is a non live drive tractor you will need to fit a over run coupling so you can change gears easily and stop when you need to without the flywheel pushing you along.
along time ago not many tractors were live drive and they ran balers off them.
as i said above the right gear for the job is more important.

What gear do you find works best for bailing in a good crop
I havent used my dexta to bale with, but may give it a try
We also had a neighbour to do our baling with a 72hp leyland. but he retiered, so i bought our own baler but we have had 3 poor summers so havent done much since the dexta was finished.

Warwick, many years ago I used to use my Super Dexta with a IH 440 baler to bale hay, useing second and third gear, without any problems.But useing a IH B47 might be a better match for a Dexta as they are slightly lighter and smaller.As you only have 4 acres to do, providing its not to steep, it should not be a problem.Your bigest problem will be getting teenagers to pick up the hay bales after you have baled it!

i normally use 2nd or 3rd also @ 1500 ish rpm, i do not have a tractormeter so every thing is done by ear which is a ground speed of about 2 - 3 mph which is plenty fast enough for baling.

My baler is a mf 20 similar to eddiej baler on this website,

The manual for it states recommened pto speed is 540 to 610rpm, it certanly bales better running slightly faster than the normal 540 pto speed.
i think its slighty to heavy for a dexta on very steep ground

We use a major on our baler but we pull a flat 8 sledge too, makes a good braking device going downhill with 8 bales in the sledge but adds to the load going back up again!
