Sparks

Hi Guys,

A quick question for you, I went with my son last night to look at a dexta close by to me been sold quite cheap. it is a 63.

Tractor looks godd but alot of tin work missing, this does not really worry me as i think i can get my hands on most as replacement parts.

The thing is while been drove in the bad light, it looked like there was sparks coming out of the exhaust pipe!
I am not a very experienced engine mechanic so i was wondering if you guys knew if there was a common reason for this, the engine runs very smooth with no misses or ususal noise.
Could it just be sooth been burned off??

what you saw was hot carbon deposits from combustion, you wont see these in day light but they are still there. you must be carefull using tractors in a hay barn for this reason.

I would not buy that! It sounds dodgy! Send me the address straight away and I will come over and take it off your hands if you pay me 50 Euro!.

As James says, that is normal. If you were working hard at night, you may even see a short stub of blue flame from the top of the exhaust.

With Henrietta, at night, the whole manifold and exhaust glows cherry red and about a 150mm of flame is constant from the top of the exhaust. That is why a diesel exhaust on her, only lasts a season on the plough.
