I have noticed that when trying to start there is a slight delay then a whiff of smoke from the front end of the starting motor before it kicks in at which point the smoke stops.
All very quick but i presume this is not normal. Any ideas as to problem/ solution. Its not and never has been brilliant at starting despite being treated to new solanoid, heater button and wiring a while back.

If it's difficult to start and you have to crank, you may be developing the same fault as a tractor I look after. The bushing in the end plate wears then the armature goes off-centre and eventually starter motor stops. That's if the brief smoke is from the electrical end. The only good news from that scenario is that all the bits you need for repair are now available new.
