Diesel Injector Pump Colour

Post by russelm »

Hi All

The engine re-build is going well and I am cleaning up my injector pump at the moment (as it has been tested on a test bench and is working well).

The question is, what colour should it be?

I note that some appear to be a golden colour, is this some sort of laquer coat (as mine is cleaning up to a very shiney finish!)

Many thanks

Mark

I think the "gold" is a mix of diesel and dirt built up over time. never seen a restored one with the gold. think they were originally blue, mine had the remains of blue paint left on it.

John

I'm leaving mine bare metal, like Stefan - I expect he has researched how they were originally.

Some people paint them, but being alloy I don't think they will corrode if you don't.

Perhaps someone can give chapter & verse on how they were originally.

Dont think we saw much paint on our pump but after some deliberation we did this:

I like the bear look!

Think it might well stay like that then.

They were Blue, and the radiator hoses as well and their retaining clamps, I think even the fan belt had traces of paint when Dexta's came here new. So black starters, dynamos, hoses, are no no's if originality is the goal.

PS,I remember the paint breaking off the fuel excess button the first few times it was used, 'keep em original'

Lol ala 'Mr Bean' e.g. a room full of Dexta's, a can of empire blue paint and a firework!

My problem is, being an engineer, I dont like paint on things that shouldn't really have paint on

All Majors and Dextas had a paint job at the end of the line, so everything should be bleu.
Kind regards, Henk

Aye very good, lol, the question was asked and answered, I think they were designed by engineers,PDI took care of paint where it shouldn't be.

I think it is a simple case of at the end of the production line eveything on the tractor was sprayed blue. Small cosmetic items added later (grills?) may have been a different colour. For real true restoration maybe the side of the pump facing the engine block should only show a drift of paint as I'm sure the painters did a quick paint over and covered everything.

To be honest, I want something that looks tidy and is serviceable rather than totaly true to the day it left the factory (sorry  )

So in my mind, painted rubber hoses, cables, jubilee clips etc are not ideal.

Its interesting though that they just slapped on the paint as that explains some of the bare areas behind the pump and in the harder to reach parts.

My Dexta at the moment is a bit of hybrid colour wise as its got Blue panels and a red chassis and engine! (and was named 'Red One') so anything will be an improvement !

I think red is the primer, because after I pressure washed mine it was mostly mottled red or rust coloured - not much blue left.

I dont think it is the primer as under the red is blue!

Its going back together ok at the moment anyway, I slapped some blue on behind where the fuel pump will sit (before its bolted in place).

Ah ha! maybe there's red primer under the blue!

I assumed that there was a red primer, eg as inside the castings like the bell housing, which seems to have lasted the 50 years pretty well even on the outside surfaces.

Look forward to some pics as you reassemble.

Removed the Clutch pedal arm today to replace the bush.
On removal the whole of the inner side of the arm was unpainted as was the PTO lever.
Somewhere were the production line paint boys didn't quite get their spray guns near!
