Front axle pin

Post by russelm »

Ok, so my front axle pin is VERY worn (will post pics this evening) and I have ordered a new pin and bush which have arrived today.

The question is, should the pin be a comfortable fit within the bush as there is quite a bit of slop (note the bush is not fitted yet). The parts are Sparex items.

As an addition, my pin setup had two washers and a spacer on it and looks to have never been taken apart before (I note from searching the old posts that there have been questions regarding this)

Ok, so measured the bush internal diameter and its 45mm.

The pin is 44.5mm

This is resulting in a fair bit of potential play which I am guessing should not be there?

Hi Mark,
Seems more than my new pin & bush. Can't measure it right now, but I remember it being a fairly snug fit.

Thanks Ben

I would expect it to be a snug fit given the type of bush used so I will have to get onto the supplier tomorrow

My old one however wasn't a snug fit any more!

I believe pin dia should be 44.5mm. This is the ID of the spacer that Dextrous made me which fits my pin very snugly, so I guess that your bush ID is a shade too big. I guess one could turn up a bespoke bush on a lathe

Mark,
Just measured my new pin for you with a feeler gauge and the gap between pin and bush is about 0.18mm.

So, there appears to be conflicting info on the web with reference to the front axle pin bush size, so far I have:

EMMARK: 48.7mm (OD) x 44.8mm (ID) x 37.9mm (L)
SIlver Fox: 49mm (OD) x 45mm (ID) x 38mm (L)

The latter could just be a rounded figure

But pin and bush should be a matched pair surely?

Should be a very snug fit Mark. Vapormatic ones for Dexta are good.

Can you hazard a figure for the snugness :scratchhead:

You may not have a problem. I suspect the bush is a split DU bush. I have never seen a DU bush that did not close up the ID a little when installed. It will be interesting to see what the ID measures after you press it in. If you don't have a press use a bolt with large washers to draw it into place. Don't use a hammer or punch on DU bushes.

All that assumes you don't have a solid bush.

Well, I had no joy from the seller or the original supplier (Sparex).

So I bought another new pin and bush from a well known supplier and guess what, there the same!.

And with the bush fitted its no 'snugger' either!

Dam annoying this as the front section is all finished bar the body work and this pin issue!

Play is the same as before which makes me think that the parts may be from the same manufacturer.

I have contacted the seller so will update on progress.
