Hi there,

Recently I split my Super Dexta to rebuild the engine. Upon splitting the tractor I found thick oil residue on the inside of the bell housing and both clutch plates were soaked in oil. Pictures can be found here:

I am just wondering which end this oil is likely to have come from and what seals it it likely to have leaked through, the engine end seals will be replaced. Will it be necessary to replace the seal at the gearbox end?

Cannot get to your pictures as I do not have a Yahoo account and do not want to sign up. However, if you have it split it is false economy not to replace the two gearbox seals whilst you have it apart.

If it is a live clutch there is a seal and bearing between the two input shafts.

That oil looks like it comes from the engine, how bad is the clutch?

Thanks, both the clutch plates were soaked in oil so i dismantled the whole thing and gave it a real good clean up, keeping an eye on the orientation of all the pieces. The actual clutch assembly itself is in great shape, it was just all pretty oily.

I also notice that in the workshop manual it says that the clutch spring retainers have to be replaced upon removal. Is this completely necessary or can i re-use the old ones provided they are still nice and flat?

This is my first restoration project so I apologise if my questions seem a bit stupid!

No problem with the pictures, all they needed was [img]picture%20URL[/img].

Photobucket is very good, in the little drop down menu with each picture it automatically copies all the details for you and you can add it straight into your message.

No problem with the retainers but I would change the gearbox seals as the small one will run any leak straight onto the clutch.

Hi john, I did this change of this two oilseals when I repaired a dualclutch at my 1960 Dexta some years ago. when oil is started to leak into clutch and bellhouse, it is best to change all this seals from engine and splines when tractor is splitted. you have to disamble the thrustbearing and two splines together with the shaft in front of gearbox, and after you need to take appart the splines and seals from back of the shaft. I did also changed the ropeseal from rear end of engine too.

Ahh okay, I'm going to give it a good clean up first then replace the seals, I will be replace the rope seal on the crankshaft when I build the engine back up as well.
