Engine for Dexta

Hello,

Has anyone assembled 6 engine or some other one for Dexta instead on Dexta's Perkins? Which one is the easiest to fit? I would be obliged if someone could advise me to find suitable engine for Dexta.
I think the best solution is the engine, which is well-known and spares easily available.

Kind regards,
Paavo A

Forgive me for asking, but why would you want to fit a 6cyl engine to a Dexta? :scratchhead:

Good answer Ben.Yes other engines have been put in Dexta's ,but I personaly think with a Dexta it doesnt get any better than the Super Dexta engine. As for "Dexta's Perkins" :stress:  TSG

You are partly right, but I saw last summer Volvo 400 tractor with Nissan 6 cyl engine, which had very well done and was running nicely. Sometimes it just wants to do something that deviates from normal.
On the other hand Super Dexta's engine is one option and the easiest to fit.

Will the back end take the power from a more powerful engine?

Its down to the torque output I suspect.

The setup certainly looks very strong.

Any ideas for a engine conversion for a Dexta. Straight 6 or V8, diesel of course.

Just bought a partly burnt Dexta and I am just wondering

How about this one that was on our display at Blue Force 1000.

It was built by one of the Blue Force team and ran well. I think it was a Mitsubishi but will check up.

I'd rather use a diesel engine :D

Also 4wd conversion is on my mind. Always wanted a 4wd Dexta! 8)

Hi Broadspeed,

I don't know how much Ford changed the Dexta block design from the original P3.144 Perkins engine it was based on, but it may be possible that one of the early Perkins P6.288 or P6.305 engines could just about bolt in. Maybe not the easiest engine to find, but you would end up with the closest thing to a genuine 6 cylinder Dexta engine.

My concern would be how the clutch would handle the extra torque. There is also the problem of the 90 plus horsepower you could end up with in a light tractor turning it into a lethal weapon that will stand up and throw you off the first time you hit the throttle. Hmm, Sounds like fun, I have the P6 sitting 6 feet behind me, shame I don't think my wife will let me buy another tractor.

Good luck with the project.

Regards, Frank.

Hi Frank,

This was very useful info, thanks! That would be the easiest way, if the mentioned 6cyl engines would be almost bolt on :)
I think that the clutch or gearbox won't be a problem, because it would be only in "show" use

Does anyone know what Perkins is fitted to this Dexta?

Hi Broadspeed,

That is either a P6.288 or P6.305. The injection pump is mounted further back on the block than my P6.288 and it is fitted with an exhaust manifold out of a truck or car, but the rest of the block looks the same. My guess if I had to choose is an early P6.305.

Regards, Frank.

Ok. Seems that is is fitted straight to original mounting plate.

Do You know what kind of trucks etc. these engines has been installed originally?

Hi Broadspeed,

The Perkins P6 was used in lots of English vehicles. Hopefully some of the UK members can give you more information. The only other place I would look is in the marine forums. They were also a very popular boat motor.

Both of my P6 engines came out of E27N P6 conversion tractors. Somehow I don't think you would take the engine out of one of those if you found one to fit into your Dexta.

Regards, Frank.

P.S. If you need parts for a P6 rebuild, most parts are available new. I can supply a list of current part numbers for parts that have been superseded if you need them.

Of course the other option would be to find a 3.152 engine that had been fitted with a Turbo. Yes they were made!!

I had a neighbor with an MF 253, Perkins 3.152 turbo. Here is the data sheet:
