Damn weather..... Note - fit a tub on the exhaust.

Post by 60dexta »

I have just (well all afternoon) been out to put a throttle linkage clip on my Fordson Dexta.
I pulled out the exhaust to be able to remove the bonnet. Then I noticed the orangy mess down in the exhaust manifold. Peering down it I found it full of water..... bo**^%ks.....
It does have a little flappy thing on the top but the water must have been hitting the pipe and running down and in.
A quick sort out needed. It has only been about a week since it was last running so hopefully corrosion has not got too established.
Wet and dry hoover out and hoovered out the water in the manifold.
Rocker cover off.
Thin washers slipped in on top of the valves to crack the exhaust valves open.
Turned it over by hand whilst hoovering the manifold.
Turned it over slowly on the starter with the tractors own deadish battery with washers still in place to ensure the water had somewhere to go.
Lots of squelching and muck flying out of the exhaust.
Added a jump battery to spin it over faster.
More muck flying out.
Shims removed to get compression and started it.
A short period of steamy exhaust until it cleared.
Drain the oil that I only put in about a week ago.
Sump plate and strainer out.
Oil filter off and filter out.
Mopped around inside the sump to get rid of any water I could find in there.
Washed parts out.
Reassembly.
Fresh oil.
Started again and left running for 30 mins or so to get some heat into it.

Seems fine.... just hope the bores are ok. I don't have time to be stripping that down. At least all the parts are easily available.

Needless to say the exhaust is now out and an empty grease pot is over the exhaust manifold.

Grrr... 10 steps forwards and 9 back.

Can't believe she would come to much harm in a week.

Does she live outside?

she'll be fine

a rough farmer before u will have done far far worse m8 .

good idea with the washers / shims .

wen i removed my exhaust manifold , i spotted a little hole / drilling , sealed with carbon directly below exhaust pipe , i drilled it out , about 3 mm ,pressumabley a drain hole ?
even with a flap on top of the exhaust water will enter were the pipe joins the manifold , in heavy rain .
dont know if they are supposed to have the hole there , in the manifold ? i'll photo i f u want .
Some mornings I wake up grumpy, but most mornings I let her sleep in.

Hole on the bottom of the manifold/exhaust elbow is the answer. Never did like the flappy/noisy/leaky exhaust flap on the later '000nd series.

I did concider a drop or two of water getting in there.... but about a mug full came out of the sump and a good cylinder full out of the exhaust.
Amazing how much rain must have blown against the pipe.

It needs its own shed.... which is in the pipeline... but just not at the moment. :?

Glad you got it sorted out before too much grief.

Had the same problem some years back with our Super Dexta with rain water following the pipe down into the manifold and the drain hole being plugged.
Dad then brazed a thin washer or ring around the muffler pipe just above where it enteres the manifold to deflect water away from the joint.
It still makes me check the drain hole often enough though!

I'm glad that you guys mentioned the drain hole. I'm going to have to check and make sure that mine is open.
Thanks for the suggestion.
