Should dynamo get hot when running? and oil leak pic

Post by pbufton »

As per the title really..when I go to start my dexta, there seems to be a large draw of current to the dynamo?

And the engine spins over a little quicker if I disconnect the 2 wires on the dynamo. Going to check the wiring diagram tomorrow but should the dynamo get even remotely warm when engines running? As mine is seeming to get HOT. Charge light comes on with ignition on, goes out when engine fires. Oil light doesn't come on at all currently

Next is this freak oil leak at the front of the engine, crank seal you say? Not this time. you see the puddle of oil sat on the flat face of the block, its running down the seam at the back and dripping off the flat face. Where the end of the screwdriver is pointing, I notice a bit of breathing from this area too.

Engine is 90% healthy I'd say, only slight hint of blue smoke on overrun, and recently fitted a new wiring loom.

Thanks in advance :)

I had a similar problem with oil leaking in that area a while ago and it turned out to be the oil seal around the accelarator shaft on the left hand side of the injector pump. I removed the pump(which is a bugger to do)and took it down to a pump specialist who replaced the seal and I have had no more problems.

I hear what Mervyn is saying but I have just addressed this problem oil leak on one of our dextas, and it turned out to be a failed gasket between the injection pump and timing case.
Easy fix with a new gasket or instant gasket.

Best Regards, Jamie.
It was like that when I found it.... & I wish I had left it alone!

Thanks all, I had the pump off a couple of weeks ago to weld the crack in the block, can't remember whether I changed the gasket or not. The dynamo getting hot is a wiring issue, someone else with the same fault has posted further down on the board

When I overhauled my engine some years ago, I left out a bolt in the back between the injector pump and the block. It's hard to see, but you can feel with your hand to see if you got them all back in.
It sounds like your gasket may be bad from what you say about having it out recently. I thought I'd tell you my story to see if you might have the same problem I did.
