using hydraulics for brakes

I have been looking for ways to operate the brakes on a trailer I have and have been wondering about uning a small hydraulic ram coupled to the tractor hydraulics. I think this would give brakes that are either on or off but would be usefull as a safety system as the hills round here are very steep.
any comments or thoughts welcome.

I mentioned this idea a while ago to a local Ag contractor I used to work for. They said it wasn't uncommon in the past. Probably not ideal, but it gives you an option should you need it...

the idea would be for an emergency brake. although is there a suitable way to tame the brakes if i use hydraulics?
would it be possible to over power the brakes if i used one of these with a suitable linkage?

I guess the force applied to the brake system will be enormous. 5000N at 100bar - 850 kg at 170bar. What you need is a trailer brake valve.mekanicly operated. It will operate the brake sylinders according to the force on the brake pedal.

im trying to avoid making it too specilised to one tractor. guess I could reduce the force with a linkage?
or does anyone know a way to reduce the hydraulic pressure?

the forward pressure on this coupler provides brake fluid pressure to your hydraulic trailer brakes. when your tractor slows down,,so does your trailer. I have had many boat trailers set up this way.

looks similar to over-run brakes exept they used brake cables insted of fluid.
wonder how much troubole it would be to make an over-run coupling

I have decided to set up a cable running between the 2 brakes and used a hydraulic brake cyclinder to push on the cable to pull both brakes on. should also balance the brakes.
any comments?
