RPM gauge not working

After doing some work on electrics my RPM indicator stopped working. Before I dismantle the whole tractor, what is the most obvious cause? Could the cable have slipped off the gauge?

Mmmm that would be bad.

I'll start demolishing the whole thing this weekend.

First off, disconnect the cable from the back of the fuel pump and twist the inner drive cable with your finger. You should see the tacho needle twitch. If it doesn't, problem is at the tacho end.

If tacho does twitch, then the prob is in the back of the fuel pump. For some reason the square section of the inner drive cable is not engaging in the fuel pump.

Have you changed the cable? If so, beware that some of the replacement cables have drive cables which are too short. I threw out my repro cable and refitted my 50yr old original - which works fine.
