temp gauge not working

Brand new Temp gauge i bought off ebay doesnt seem to be functioning...however it is probably made for the deisel dexta? i thought they would be the same. however could it be because i broke the protective coil wire around the temp wire? does the coiled wire serve just for protection?

It doesn't matter what Dexta it was made for. The guage reads water Temperature. The coiled wire is for protection. Are you sure you didn't damage the thermocouple wire inside when you damaged the outer covering?. Remove the sending unit fron your engine and either hold a flame under it or dip it into a cup of boiling water. If the needle doesn't move up on the gauge it's bad.
