Cheap Proofmeters

Post by WayneB »

On my old Dexta I replace the defunct proofmeter with a Massey Ferguson Proofmeter and it still works like a charm eight years later.
On my Super Dexta I bought a Dexta Proofmeter, obviously cheap, and it has failed already. Still counts hours, but needle sits against peg. Both from similar source.
Same scenario on my thousand series and cheap tachometer, it last 93 hours, and my S Dexta less. I have an old faded meter to put back in. Cheap thing didn't even last two years.

Replaced my 1000 series with a FNH part, and it works great. I guess cheap parts are made -- what -- CHEAPLY?
Tractor poor, 59 Dexta, 61 & (3) 62 SuperDexta-s, 68 4000 Ford 4x4, 81 Ford 1100 4x4, 55-HD5G AC Crawler Loader, 1951 CAT D6 9U, 1967 160B Dynahoe backhoe and now a toy JD 850 4x4 loader compact.

Where made

Post by WayneB »

FNH proofmeter tachometers are not made in Turkey, India, or China. The failed knock off proofmeter/tachs were not made in Britian or USA. But of course I did not know this when I purchase them. I went CHEAP. My current 4000 FHN part was made in Britian and the needle is smoothe. My FNH dealer said he would replace it in the first year, first 100 hours, just bring it back.
Think the eBay proofmeter are likely cheap also. Anyone bought one that has lasted 300-600 hours?
I haven't bought another S. Dexta tach, I am still looking for a source.

S. Dexta Proofmeter

Post by WayneB »

Took a gamble and ordered a Tach off eBay from NYC.
Installed, and at least the needle is smooth. The previous Cheap Tach had jittery needle from day one.
I honestly do not know where the thing was made, no stamp, or numbers.
But hey, they all are probably one source for the replacement proofmeters...
