my dexta engine repair

Hi Guys,

We have had a Dextas on the farm for almost all my life. Some 10-12 years ago (may be longer) we bought one which wasn't bad, but not a real good starter.

After quite some use it was almost impossible to get it running below 15C. Time for a little TLC I thought some years ago. Took off the head, refaced valve seats etc. but then the project got stuck.

Some weeks ago I decided to proceed. Stripped the complete engine and with some help pressed out the liners etc. Please find some pictures below.









Although the bores and the rings were quite worn, the crankshaft and bearings are in remarkeably good condition.

Nice job Emiel.
Ever tought of getting an engine stand? It could make the engine overhaul a lot easier. The engine of a dexta isn't that big, so a standard car engine thing would do the job.
Are you refurbishing the head also?

I used a Machine Mart engine stand when I refurbished my Dexta engine. Made the job much easier as you could rotate the block when for example fitting the Pistons and Con Rods.
I also got some threaded rod and fitted them on the Bell housing in several bolt holes so that guiding the block onto the Bell housing was made easier as it kept both pieces in alignment when attempting to mate them. Once you were a nuts thickness gap then undo the rod and that last few mm is much easier.

Do think about an engine stand, but I don't think I'll be overhauling engines really often.
