Timing case cover eroded behind pump

Just stripping down my dexta block and noticed that the timing case cover has been heavily corroded behind the pump. So much so that I'll either have to tig a new bit in or replace it with another item. I am watching a couple of these on eBay and notice that they don't have any evidence of this kind of corrosion at all and so wonder why mine does ? Is there something missing from behind the pump that would normally prevent the coolant coming into contact with the timing cover ? Has anyone else come across anything like this ?

Hi,

There should be a thin copper plate between water pump and timing case. At least on mine is one.

Brilliant ! That explains it, I couldn't help wondering if there was something there originally that someone has left out when they put it back together at some point.
Many thanks

Next question: Does anyone know where I can obtain one of these copper shims as I can't see mention of it in the parts list and it's not shown on the exploded diagram. Also, from what is on eBay, it seems there are a few of these timing covers. Can anyone tell me what the differences are between NV3654, NV2205 and NV253 ? Mine is just a plain old non super Dexta.

Hi,

The timing case is bolted to the block (NV3654) The Cover is bolted to the case (NV 253) and the NV2205 is the set of base and cover.

For the back plate. I would purchase the right gasket, take it to a Fablab or makerspace, draw it over in cad and cut it out from a thin plastic sheet with their laser.

You could trace around the machined face to make a pattern.

Many years ago when I was refurbishing my Dexta the copper gasket had corroded away. I went to RS components and found a pack of Copper shim sheet (Various thicknesses) and they were big enough to make up a gasket from the thickest sheet.
Take a look here but not sure if this will accommodate the size?

Thank you Jerry and Old Hywell, yes, I think this is good advice, there is plenty of choice of copper plate on eBay fairly cheap too. Many thanks
