Dexta leaking diesel

After recent oil changes I noticed that my Dexta is leaking fuel when running. The pig tail shaped leak off pipe from the Simms injection pump is dripping every 5 or 10 seconds (I collected about two spoons of fuel in half an hour), and there is also fuel dripping from the flat bottom of the injection pump where the leak off pipe is attached. I can't say for sure where that fuel is coming from. It may come from the nut where the leak off pipe is attached (at least I see fuel there), but it's hard to tell, since most of the flat area is wet. It could also be coming from where the lift pump is attached, but I don't see as much fuel there.

I have been browsing the Internet and different forums, including this one, for advice, and am not sure if I have one or two problems, or where to start. As I understand it the dripping from the leak off pipe may have different reasons, including broken diaphragms in governor or lift pump.

I don't have much experience so any advice on where to start and what to look for would be much appreciated.

The pig tail dribble is perfectly acceptable, although it suggests worn pump elements or a punctured lift pump diaphragm at the rate you're saying. The union needs a clean and then tighten it securely, you should have it stop there with that. Neither are of particular concern.

Thanks a lot! Will cleaning and tightening the union require bleeding the fuel system? (Not sure how the pig tail pipe connects on the inside.)

Hi,

Cleaning and refitting the pig tail is in the lube compartment of the pump and therefore can be done without bleeding.

It might be an idea to refurbish or replace the lift pump. This is a major diesel leak source in the pump.

Oil lubricates far better than diesel so keeping the oil in and the diesel out is good. Leakage along the high pressure pump elements is also a cause but not easy to stop. As long as the tractor runs and starts well I would not try to fix that.

I must say I only start worrying when my Fords stop leaking.
