1963 Super Dexta Head Studs

Hi Chaps, I'm new to the Forum, this is my first post so hoping someone can shed some light onto a query please.

My father bought a Super Dexta from new in 1963, unfortunately she's fallen into a bit of a state after an engine failed some years ago. Someone else pulled the head off and there she sat after realizing the pistons had picked up.
Now I've decided to restore her (I worked for a Ford Agri dealership, "Jewells", some years back) - I intend to bring her mechanically back to life but with original patina - all engine parts etc will be refurbished so she keeps all her original parts - where I can !!

So, thats the chat (sorry!) - my question is, one of the head studs, the rear most stud in the block back towards the battery has what appears to be two split collars (spacers, washers) on the stud, one at the base near the block the other further up, I thought initially a gasket location collar but then why one further up the stud and why only on one stud? - I'm baffled so I did some Google searching and found another image of a block with studs showing and although a little blurred, the same stud also has these two collars !!

Help, what are they for please !! (was going to add an image but not sure how - any help!!)

Thanks

Hi,

According to my parts list there should be 15 studs.

6 times 960E-6067, used 57-64 (these are the ones the rocker shaft mounts to.
9 times 960E-6066B, used 57-64
and off course 15 nuts, 117644ES used from 57-7/63 or 114203ES used 7/63 upon end of production. BOth are 7/16-20. Don't know the difference.

Can't remember a setup with extra collars ore something like that on the '59 dexta I did last year. Migh be you have an aftermarket cyl head, block, or found the leftovers of a repair in the past.

For pictures, you should upload them to an online fotoalbum which is freely accesable. then you should copy the url of the image and put in in your message. Preceed the url with a in square brackets placed 'img' before an square brackets /img behind the url. Then it should work.

Thanks Emiel - I'll upload an image - maybe it will help.
All parts are original to the Tractor but of course the heads probably been off before in its life!

Appreciate your time

OK, so these are the two split collars / washers that's on the one stud - I can't see them in any parts manuals but strange as I've seen them on other Google images whilst researching.
Maybe I should remove them?

Thanks for any help.

Hi,

The workshop manual (0ct 62) states that;

"When fitting a new cilinder head take particular note of the diameter of the rear stud hole (exhaust manifold side). Where this hole is 19/32 in. diameter the current stud 957E-6066-B must be used and a washer fitted between the retaining nut and the head in order to provide adequate seating area for the nut. Where the hole is 15/32 in. the original type of stud 1/8 in. shorter then that now used, will be satisfactory and no washer is needed"

I don't think your collars fit to this descripton, but I can't find any other clue. Check your head on the mating face to the gasket whether there is a hole for this collar and otherwise I would not refit them.

by the way, I think some guy put these on the stud after the head and head gasket where taken off. Otherwise it would be quite a tight fit to get the gasket and head over them. These are close to the 19/32" I think.

Yea, I'll check against the gasket once block is back from the shop, just trying to cover reasons for them being there before I start engine rebuild.
Appreciate your help and advice, thanks Emiel.
