Rescuing an old Dextra
Rescuing an old Dextra
Hello,
I am completely new to Fordsons and found this old beauty and want to rescue her before more snow comes. The previous owner was replacing the head gasket and lost the nuts. I am trying to date her and learn as much as I can about her. I am speaking with England 20 for the nuts etc. I would love any help identifying her.
The tag that is riveted to the plate between the hood and drivers seat is worn, but I can clearly see Dextra on the emblem on the hood.
Here is a link to all of the pictures and I have tried to directly attach a few.

Re: Rescuing an old Dextra
It sounds like a pre-1962 Dexta, but your pics aren't visible. Look for the serial number, engine number and casting codes to identify age.

Re: Rescuing an old Dextra
Is this an engine code?
Were else can I look for numbers?

Re: Rescuing an old Dextra
I'm afraid your pics are not yet visible, check they're not private.
The engine number is on the block beneath the front exhaust port and is a seven digit number (from 1400000 to 1553322, or 1600000 to 1664496 if you have a Super Dexta block (unlikely though)). A little beneath that but in line with cylinder no. 2 is the block casting code, this is a letter and two or three digits depending on the date. The serial number is on the bell housing flange just ahead of the timing inspection cover, and will be prefixed 957E or 09(A, B, C or D) and a number which will either be between 001 and 72000 plus a bit more or a six digit number, this depends on which prefix you have. All other casting codes are either letter number letter or number letter number and often look like they're screwed in to the casting.
Hope you can sort your pics.

Does this work?

If not here are the numbers I found:
On exhaust manifold
0540122 H 016
Bell Housing
957E 7005
T4
J18F
Side of the block G0280098F
Under that a 2
(6?)20104(8?)

Re: Rescuing an old Dextra
Those pics are visible, the code is 18 July 1961 (actually the gearbox). The engine number is higher up, just beneath the top of the block on a flat square protruding from the surface. Make sure you clean the location of a number, as otherwise you won't see it properly.

Re: Rescuing an old Dextra
the tractor serial number is on the left side on the flange joining engine to clutch housing this number is used to date the tractor
Re: Rescuing an old Dextra
Okay thank you very much. Yeah I'm trying my best to clean the numbers but the whole trailer needs de-iced and degreased so since it's outside at the moment I'm trying to pinpoint it before I go into to do before I clean the whole thing and making a huge mess.
c
Can you tell me more specifically where the serial number is on that housing? for instance is it on the flat portion perpendicular to the tractor or along the side?

Re: Rescuing an old Dextra
It's on the LH bell housing flange just in front of the timing inspection cover, it's most likely to be prefixed 957E.

Re: Rescuing an old Dextra
Ah Then:
957E 7005
T4
J(I?)8F
So can I safely assume and order parts that it's a 61?

Re: Rescuing an old Dextra
One casting code is not enough, you need to find more, the serial number and engine number as well. Be very careful as aftermarket suppliers don't tend to be very reliable with certain things, check as many parts books as you can first.
957E-7006 is the gearbox part number, and J18F is 18 July 1961, but it could be a stock casting or a replacement.
Your last pic isn't visible.

Re: Rescuing an old Dextra
I think I found them!
Serial 957F90420
Engine 1491599
Serial 957F90420
Engine 1491599
Re: Rescuing an old Dextra
I'm afraid your pics aren't visible any more.
957E-90420 is later 1961 before the change to computer type serial numbers in November. 1491599 indicates a similar period and a Dexta engine (not a Super Dexta engine).
