Hi,
I have looked through the topics and must be missing something. I seem to have only TDC and Spill marked on my flywheel. I have not been able to find the 20 or 26 marked. Do I just set the pump from the Spill mark on this 1964 Super.
Everything I have seen suggests that I should find these other marks. Please help!

How many spill marks do you have? Later flywheels have two spill marks, one at 26º BTDC and one at 20º BTDC. If you have a minimec (that's what you'd expect on a Super Dexta) you use the spill mark at 20º. If you have a pneumatic governor you use 26º. If there's only one mark it's at 26º and therefore not usable for timing a minimec.

I have been round the flywheel again and the only lines visible are TDC, followed by the Spill line. This is then followed by 0400.304 which is approx 180degrees from TDC. I’ve tried cleaning it up with clutch and break cleaner but these other marks don’t seem to be there?

The spill mark should be before the TDC mark. Do you have a minimec? If so, you'll need to find 20º BTDC by trial and error, once you can run you can check to see if the timing is correct. Bad running at this stage probably means the timing is out.

It is a mechanical Minimec. So should 20degree be between the marking for TDC and SPILL. If so does ant know how many teeth on the flywheel should it be from either mark??
And secondly is it normal for the mark to be missing? I have found that with the SPILL mark lined up it corresponds with the right mark on the fuel pump cog.

Altough I can’t find any evidence in literature, I suspect you only have a 20 degrees spill mark on this late engine.

I would make a pointer, which points at the front pulley and then rotate the engine to TDC. Mark this on the pulley, then rotate to the spill mark and mark this again. Measure the distance of movement between the two marks. You should be able to find out whether this is 26 or 20 degrees.

If it is 26 to you might be able to get to 20 without to much trouble.

The distance between tdc and 26 degrees is 3.52”. Between tdc and 20 degrees is 2.7”. Difficult to measure through the little hole.

Thanks for all the replies, Emiel’s is interesting and by calculating how many teeth are on the flywheel should help! Did read somewhere it was 370 or there abouts!!

Just had a look at 1 on EBay, looks to be about 124?
Any more accurate answers please??
