Hi. A friend has just bought a dexta but throttle seems a bit strange. It is connected to the air intake pipe not the fuel pump. Does anyone know of this type of throttle arrangement or has it been modified?

This sounds like your Dexta is pre April 1962. It has a pneumatic governor, and uses the vacuum in the intake manifold to control the engine speed. A butterfly valve closes to reduce engine speed, this is connected to the throttle lever. A suction pipe goes from the governor on the injector pump to the intake manifold.
You can find your serial number on the front LH side of the bell housing immediately in front of the timing inspection cover on the flange. There are casting codes on most large castings.
