Stripped Clutch Disk Splines

I split my 64 Super Dexta knowing I had some sort of single stage clutch problem. I was mowing some short grass and the machine was not in a bind. It just stopped moving forward.

Once I got it apart I found that all of the spline teeth in the clutch disk were stripped and the spline hole is now basically just a smooth bore. The splines on the transmission shaft look ok.

Does anyone have an idea why it happened? I’ve read some articles about other tractor brands that say it just happens sometimes. I have no idea how many hours the clutch disk had on it but since I’ve had the tractor I’ve probably put at least 500 hours on it.

A second question. Does anyone know of a source in the USA for a complete 11” single stage clutch kit? I’m looking for a kit with the disk, bearings and alignment tool.

I can't really answer a lot here, but the disk alignment tool should be easy enough to make (not available new), you can also use an input shaft if that's easier. Most aftermarket suppliers have the other parts, although there can be several problems with some fitting properly due to parts not being quite right.

I have had good results on alignment tools by measuring the outside diameter of the shaft and finding a socket with the similar shaft diameter. Once assembled the disk will have to move slightly laterally as it slides over the input shaft. Tapping the levers allow a momentarily loosening of the pressure plate which fixes the clutch disk position.

The common UK suppliers (Agriline, Emmark, ...) do also ship worldwide. Maybe you also can take a look at yesterdaystractors.

As for the alignment tool:
Question for the dexta specialists here: Is it easy to take out the ingoing shaft of the gearbox? If so, unbolt it (like the major) and use it to align the clutch.

The PTO input shaft (live clutch only) will come out easily, but the main input shaft needs the bell housing to come off.
