Small bit of Dexta research needed.

Chaps,

Those of you who look after diesel Dextas, would you please do a small piece of research for me.

Could you please measure from the engine/clutch flange to the end of the "bump" in the clutch housing casting, that covers the back of the starter. Please then post the date of your tractor and the length of the "bump".

Many thanks.

Terry,

Should have said from the engine/clutch flange but thanks for that I can work it out from your figures.

Brian,
Our 2 '62 Super Dextas both have the longer bump. (About 7" long with a 10" space between it and the transmission)
Gives me an excuse to run the 2 miles up the road, visit my neighbour, check his coffee pot and Dec'60 Dexta :) !!

Thanks Chaps,

This is all to do with petrol Dextas as you might have guessed :D

The petrol has an inertia starter and the diesel a pre-engaged one. So the starter bendix enters the flywheel ring gear from the front in a diesel and from the rear in a petrol. There was not enough room for the inertia starter in the early housing so Ford altered the casting in later tractors from around 1960/61.

This casting then became the "norm" for all tractors.

We found a petrol Dexta in Holland which had casting codes on all parts other than the clutch housing, for 1958. It also had an early 957E number from 1958, rather than a 959E petrol Dexta serial number stamped in "Ford" letters on the flange.

What I am interested in is whether this is a "bitsa" or a true early petrol. I thought at first "bitsa" but now I start to wonder.

Diesel tractors, at the time, had a short "bump" but this one must have had a long "bump" to include the starter. That could explain why there were no casting codes on the clutch housing as it was a "one off". Unfortunately my pictures are just a bit out and don't show the "bump".

I missed taking the engine number of this tractor but I got a few other pictures. I just hope we meet it again at Meddo this year. I am taking the trailer and I don't think the owner knows what he might have!!

For the scrap clutch/gearbox I've acquired:
Measuring from engine flange to base of the starter bulge = ~7"
Tractor no 09C914...
Bell housing casting code D2J
957E
7505C
T2

I can measure my 1961 Dexta next week when I'm in Wales.
All the best,
Ben

Hello,

The measurement are:
Dexta 1, present at last Meddo Show:

18 CM approx 8" from front of casting to back of housing
Casting Code L7 F (F almost unreadable)
Serial No. 09B 7?1617 (not guarantee on the number, but the 09B is correct)

Dexta 2, purchased recently
9 CM, approx 3,6" from front of casting to back of housing
Casting code M8C
Serial No. 957E 42718 (behind the E barely readable)

Dimensions are taken from the front of the clutch housing casting, also behind the adaptor plate and to the end of the casting. Dimensions are not to the millimeter taken.

Interesting topic Brian.

Best regards

Emiel

Our neighbours Dec '60 Dexta has the long bump, like our '62's.
Casting date code >>> P13D
Serial # >>> 957E 71891

But.. the casting part # is 957E 7505B compared to our '62 Super Dextas with 957E 7505C??. (Don't know if there are other differences than the starter bump)

Also 1958 parts manual shows the clutch housing part number as 957E 7501 compared to 957E 7501C in the 1962 parts manual.

Cheers,
Les

Thanks for that. I don't know at this time. That is one of the next questions to ask, she and her sister were "make weights" in a load of Ford 4 and 5000 from a dealer over there.
