Ford 6000 Select O Speed

Post by JC »

I'm going to go look at a 6000 with SOS for a friend, who wants to use it to pull a baler. I don't know much about these. What should I look for? What are their weak points or common problems?
Thanks.

I would think twice about that unit if you are going to work it. The 6000 has the worst reputation of any Ford tractor although if used carefully they can do a job.

The SOS gearbox was a good one on later tractors but needs regular service as far as oil changes and filter changes go. You would need a specialist repairer if anything goes wrong with it and some parts are not available. Make sure it drives and pulls in all the gears. Don't worry too much if the PTO keeps turning unless it turns under load.

IMHO this would be a good tractor if you wanted one for shows/tractor drives etc. but I would look for a good 5000/5600/6600/7000/7600 if it were me. The engines and gearboxes on these are virtually bullet proof and these tractors were the same unit world wide with only cosmetic changes between countries. It will be more expensive but could be a major saving in the long run.

Thanks Brian. They want to work the tractor, not show it, so I think I will convince them to look for a different tractor. I'll put a clutch in their Farmall M and they can use it for now. It's a little small, but it will do until they find a better tractor.
