Welcome to the board. The bolt you have taken out is the one that holds the PTO lever in place. You are very lucky not to drop the whole lot in the back end. If the bolt threads back in OK, nothing has moved.

All level plugs are square headed. They are never screw headed or hexagon headed on these tractors. Later 4000's had a dipstick at the back but your level should be a plug on the hydraulic pump quite low down near the footplate.

That looks about right, you will find the engine date code stamped on the tombstone mounting under the injection pump and the engine number should be on the flat area just above the sump join on either the left or right side. They moved things around on the early tractors.

The oil recommended was a single viscosity oil, HDD20 or HDD30, not a multi-viscosity. HDD oils were a higher detergent and not the same as HD oils.

You will see that the book says "Series 3", this is the higher detergent.

Most of the modern Diesel engine oils meet this specification.

I would stick with what you have been using, I would not change to a synthetic but that is my opinion.
