4500 axle pivot pin removal

Post by pjjms »

I have a 4500 which has flogged out the axle centre pivot. it is loose in the casting but still tight in the axle. I don't see anything retaining the pin but it does not want to come out. There is a bolt about half the length of the pivot pin which goes into the pin from the front, but this only bolts up against the end of the pin. Removing it didn't release anything. The is a larger thread in the start of the same hole in the end of the pin, 7/8 UNC I think. Is this for a puller? Still does not explain what retains the pin in service.

Well as it turned out it is two pins locating in the axle in tapers and running in bushes in the support casting. The front pin was removed by screwing in a length of 3/4UNC threaded rod, putting a socket and nut on, and tightening the nut. There is a long bolt inserted from the front which draws the twp pins together seating them in the tapers. When the front pin was out I put this bolt back in and then gave it a sharp hit to knock the rear pin out.
