Ford 5000 Hyd Pump

Anyone tell me if I can simply remove the hyd pump without first removing the top cover.It's actually on a Muir Hill 121 but the same as a 5000.Want to check the pick up strainer.PTO occasionally doesn't engage or will sometimes stop in work and can be temperamental in starting again.

Right.Went to it today and the pump comes off easily.Drained the oil out and removed the pump bolts.Pulled the pump out and disconnected the small nylon pipe that goes to the PTO.Filter was filthy.Easily cleaned with petrol and air line.All back together and an improvement in both lifting and somehow lowering of arms.2500psi at spools too.Haven't tried pto yet.
