I have just purchased a ford 5000 that has a loud whining noise from the hydraulic pump, the noise stops on tickover and starts when given a little throttle, also stops when in constant pumping, but when running at higher revs even in constant pumping is noisy. I would be glad to have any advice on cause and remedy.

Could be pump bearings or an internal leak. How does the lift work? Have you done a pressure check on the pump? The pump is fairly easy to get at.

Drain the rear axle oil.

The pump is under the R/H footplate and can be removed without too much trouble.
There will be a small plastic pipe going to the PTO clutch pack to disconnect but this can be done with the pump half out.

New pumps are available, it is not always economic to repair old units as by the time you have replaced worn bearings, gears and housings you will have a new pump anyway.

When refitting take care to line the intake filter up, this just pushes into the pump and a little oil around the "O" ring helps.

Check the condition of the oil. If it has a metallic sheen the inboard brakes could be wearing out. The oil should be changed about once a year especially if the tractor is doing road work. If it is not done this will wear out the hydraulic pump.
