County axle

Hi all I have a county 944 but the threads have gone on the lower swivel on front axle, can I use a helicoil and repair it, some one suggested I cut the end of axle off and reweld a new piece on he said that's what they used to do when working them in woods, anybody have experience doing this job I would be grateful for any advice cheers
