Hi,

Just been told by the guy working on the PM that the clutch is cracked :(

Haven't seen the carnage yet, but just thought I would put out the feelers to see if anyone has such a clutch either whole or in bits. will being seeing the damage myself in the next day or two to make sure of what bits are needed.

If its the alloy cover plate thats cracked, can they be welded successfully?

Thanks

If it is the plate.... the answer is no. If it is the clutch disk the answer is, don't weld it. Just get a good rebuilt one. Dandy Dave!

Halloween, I have this one off of a late 1958 Major Image.
I have taken it off of the block and I understand that is a live drive clutch but I don't know where you are located. I believe shipping on this would not be cheap.
Good luck.

Thats true Gman, I'm over in the west of Ireland and the cost would be truly mental.
Thanks for considering it though.

Hi I had a dual stage clutch that was dropped and a piece was knocked out of the aluminium cover. a buddy Tig welded the chunk back in, i used the tractor grass cutting for a few years, it did not seem to vibrate, and it hadn't exploded in the time i used it so guess the balance was pretty good  . So it may be possible to weld the outer aluminium cover if the balance stays good :) .
Regards Robert

Just to see, you should weigh your clutch and look up the shipping amount on line. It may not be as bad as you think if the clutch parts were disassembled and you got the pieces you need. It sounds like the tractor is worth putting a clutch in. Unless you slip in it and find a scraper pulling one apart with good parts in it who really does not know what it is worth other than scrap weight, it will cost a lot to fix. Once you bit the bullet and get it done and over with you will be glad the first time you take it out for a spin. Gman has made an offer, you should look into it. Dandy Dave!

And if your in no hurry, somtimes it pays to just put you hands in your pockets, leave it sit for a while, and you may stumble apon a good deal. This is why it pays to have several other Majors to work on to keep youself bussy!

Don't get me wrong DD, I am grateful for all offers of help and have asked Gman via PM how much he is looking for for the clutch. I have another guy closer to home, on the other side of Ireland who is sure has a live drive clutch somewhere in his shed and he is having a look this weekend. So fingers crossed....
