Size of tire chains

Post by Kim »

Winter is coming in my neck of the woods. How many times have you found a set of tire chains with no size information and wondered if they would fit your intended usage? To see if tire chains will fit: measure tire tread width (W) and tire height (H). Measure, don’t use tire size! Measure tire chain length (L) and inside span (S) of the chains you are checking. Subtract W from S and then subtract that number from (H) which will give you the diameter of the tire chain circle. Multiply that by 3.14 and you get the tire chain length (L). This breaks down to: H minus (W-S)x 3.14= L. Remember you can add or overlap a few links on the chain length to make minor adjustments and a wider span requires a shorter chain length. Also. A few pounds more or less of air pressure will allow more latitude in the fit. I hope this proves helpful.
Never give up!
